Sleep is not a question around my house. With a sassing toddler cruising around, those precious naps and nights mark our routine ... and some shameless self-indulgent time. You can't poor from your cup if its empty, mamma. Here are some tips to make it through the night until you contact me tomorrow to offer you Vancouver sleep consulting real time XOXO
Keep it dark – At this time of the year its a little easier to settle for bedtime, simply because there is less day light which increases melatonin, the sleep hormone responsible for making us feel sleepy. If your child has higher levels of melatonin they will find it easier to settle to sleep and to stay asleep, so make it as dark as possible! If you need to make your child's room darker, consider investing in blackout blinds or curtains.
Keep it cool – it's hard to fall asleep if you are hot so try to regulate the temperature of the room. Ideally we would like to aim for 18-22 degrees Celsius - this may mean that you need to turn up the heat a little or down a little depending on what mother nature has in store for you.
Make sure that you are using the right sleeping sack for the current temperature. Sleep sacks can be used as a positive sleep association that help a child to wind down or prepare for sleep, so keep using them throughout summer too. Invest in a good quality sleeping bag, like Merino Wool Sleep Sacs from www.woolino.com – just change the layers of clothing that you use with it, even if it's just a nappy and nothing else! Merino works well for drawing moisture away from the skin, preventing your child from waking up from too much heat or from too little warmth.
White noise – So that you don't feel a need to tip toe around the house, I would also recommend that you use a white noise machine or an iPad with a white noise app on it.
Respect nap time and maintain your usual routine where you can – a well rested child will deal with changes better, while an overtired child is likely to be more difficult to settle and may struggle to stay asleep.
Like a written exercise routine, its only as good as the one who follows the plan ... or the one who holds you accountable. The very same is the true for sleep training, I work closely with your family and your specific needs to tailor a plan that will work for you. Did I mention our guarantee? Yep, sleep in 10 days or less my friend.
